Club World Cup Review – 15th June

The first Club World Cup match went down last night (European time) between Messi’s Inter Miami and Egyptian giants Al Ahly. A largely incoherent Inter Miami was held to a scoreless draw by Al Ahly, with the opening ceremony totally outshining the football on the pitch. Lots of folks are calling it a “pathetic spectacle,” and yeah, it’s kinda hard to disagree. It really makes you wonder how motivated these teams actually are.

I’ll still try to go through the teams and the matches, though.

Bayern Munich vs Auckland

Auckland City’s squad is mostly part-timers and amateurs.
Seriously, these guys have either taken time off school or gotten leave from their day jobs just to play in the Club World Cup.

Honestly? No offense meant at all, but this team would probably be fighting to avoid relegation if they were in Sweden’s second tier. They’re total underdogs.

Alright, so Bayern has shown up with a seriously strong squad, packing all their star players like Neuer, Kimmich, Kane, and so on. It’s pretty clear Bayern is going all out for this tournament and aiming to go deep, so Auckland probably won’t have much of a say in this one.

These guys are used to playing in front of maybe 1,000-2,000 fans back home, so this is easily the biggest match of their lives. The betting sites have set the goal line at 4.5. The odds aren’t great though, unless you bet on Bayern scoring at least 6 goals, and it’s not a given that Bayern won’t ease off the gas after 3-4 goals. So, I found a different bet instead.

It’s Auckland under 1.5 corners at 1.72 odds with most bookies. It’s not hard to imagine Auckland spending the vast majority of the 90 minutes in their own half, but we’re covering our bases in case they snag a late corner from a counter-attack.

Paris SG vs Atletico Madrid

PSG enters this tournament with the wind in their sails, fresh off a dominant season that saw them clinch the Champions League title, culminating in a resounding 5-0 victory over Inter Milan. Their recent form makes them clear favorites, and their attacking prowess is undeniable. However, questions linger about their motivation for this tournament, especially after such a successful campaign. There are also whispers of potential injuries, with Ousmane Dembele & Bradley Barcola being doubts for the match, which could impact their formidable offense.

On the other side, Atletico Madrid arrives with a strong desire to make a statement. Despite finishing 12 points behind Barcelona in La Liga, they are seen as a serious contender for the Club World Cup. Atletico’s disciplined defense and strategic counter-attacking style could pose a significant challenge for PSG. They boast a fully fit squad, and they come into the tournament more rested and are probably hungrier after a title-less season.

However, there’s no getting around the fact that PSG is a cut above in all areas of the pitch, and with a significant performance and a full squad, they would probably have forced Atlético Madrid back into their own penalty area for most of the match. But unfortunately, there isn’t much value in betting on Paris to win without Dembele and Barcola at these odds.

Palmeiras vs Porto

Sunday night’s clash between Palmeiras and Porto isn’t just another group game—it’s a straight-up battle for control of Group A. With Al-Ahly and Inter Miami waiting in the wings, both giants know dropping points here could spell trouble. Let’s cut through the noise and see what really matters.

Palmeiras arrive with a point to prove. They’ve won 15 of their last 18 competitive games, including two Brazilian league titles in three years. But recent wobbles? Back-to-back Serie A losses hint at vulnerability. Defensively, they’re rock-solid—just 8 goals conceded in 11 league games. Key weapons? Teen sensation Estevao (Chelsea-bound this summer) and the ruthless strike duo of López and Paulinho.

Porto, though, limp into this after a grim season. A distant third in Portugal, 14 points off champions Sporting CP, and an early Europa League exit. But don’t write them off: new boss Martin Anselmi steadied the ship late, winning their final three league games. Defensively tighter under him (19 goals in 18 games), but creativity’s a worry.

It feels like Porto is the weakest of the European teams, and they’re not as good as they were a couple of years ago. The smart money is on a draw and on the Under 2.5 goals bet, so let’s keep it simple and play: Palmeiras DC + Under 3.5 Goals @ 1.73 with Coolbet

Botafogo FR vs Seattle Sounders

Botafogo participates in this tournament after winning the Copa Libertadores and Brazilian league last season, but the results this season haven’t been great though, with just five wins from 11 in Brazil’s Serie A

Seattle has advantage of homefield, but sit mid-table in the Western Conference after winning just seven of their 18 MLS games.

Both teams are in questionable form, so this match is an instant skip for me.
